Position Summary 

The IT Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, optimization, and support of our client's core technology infrastructure. This position serves as a senior technical resource for enterprise systems and infrastructure, including virtualization, servers, storage, cloud platforms, identity and access management, cybersecurity controls, backup and disaster recovery, and collaboration platforms. The role requires deep hands-on experience across VMware, Microsoft server technologies, SAN/storage environments, Nutanix, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Duo, and related enterprise infrastructure systems.

The IT Systems Engineer ensures the availability, security, performance, and resiliency of mission-critical systems that support our client's operations. This position also provides advanced troubleshooting, project leadership, technical design, documentation, and escalation support for complex infrastructure issues.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engineer, implement, maintain, and optimize enterprise IT infrastructure solutions across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud environments.

  • Administer and support VMware infrastructure, including vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, clustering, HA, DRS, storage integration, and lifecycle management.

  • Administer and support Microsoft server technologies, including Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, file and print services, and related services.

  • Design, implement, and support SAN and enterprise storage environments, including storage provisioning, performance monitoring, redundancy, and disaster recovery strategies.

  • Administer and support Nutanix infrastructure, including cluster operations, hyperconverged environments, storage management, and platform optimization.

  • Manage and support Microsoft Azure services, including virtual machines, storage, networking, identity integration, security controls, monitoring, and backup/recovery solutions.

  • Administer and support Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, Entra ID/Azure AD, Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, licensing, security, and tenant-level configurations.

  • Administer and support Duo multi-factor authentication and secure access controls across enterprise systems and remote access solutions.

  • Perform advanced systems analysis, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and problem resolution for infrastructure incidents and outages.

  • Design and maintain backup, business continuity, and disaster recovery solutions for critical systems and services.

  • Monitor system performance, capacity, security posture, and availability; proactively recommend and implement improvements.

  • Lead or assist with infrastructure projects such as migrations, upgrades, refreshes, platform modernization, and cloud adoption initiatives.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, standards, procedures, and operational runbooks.

  • Collaborate with cybersecurity, networking, help desk, application support, and vendor partners to ensure secure and reliable operations.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations for infrastructure modernization, standardization, and operational efficiency.

  • Participate in after-hours maintenance, on-call support, and emergency response activities as required.

  • Ensure infrastructure solutions align with organizational security requirements, compliance obligations, and operational best practices.

  • Mentor junior IT staff and provide technical guidance on infrastructure standards and support practices.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and progressively responsible experience.

  • Six (6) to ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience in enterprise IT systems engineering, infrastructure administration, or related roles.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience supporting: VMware, Microsoft server technologies, SAN/storage platforms, Nutanix, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, and Duo.

  • Experience designing, implementing, and supporting highly available, secure, and resilient enterprise environments.

  • Experience with systems upgrades, patching, maintenance, lifecycle management, and infrastructure projects.

  • Strong experience with identity and access management, authentication, MFA, and role-based access controls.

  • Experience with backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning for infrastructure systems.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills in complex multi-vendor enterprise environments.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in local government, public sector, criminal justice, or other regulated environments.

  • Experience with hybrid cloud architecture and integration between on-premises and cloud services.

  • Experience with enterprise monitoring, endpoint/server security, and vulnerability remediation.

  • Experience supporting: hyperconverged infrastructure, storage replication, Microsoft Entra ID / hybrid identity, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams administration, PowerShell scripting and automation, and backup platforms such as Veeam.

  • Relevant certifications such as: VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate or equivalent, Nutanix Certified Professional, Microsoft 365 certifications, Storage/SAN certifications, and security-related certifications.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of enterprise infrastructure architecture, engineering, and operational support.

  • Strong knowledge of virtualization, storage, server platforms, cloud services, and identity management.

  • Strong working knowledge of cybersecurity best practices for infrastructure environments.

  • Ability to analyze complex technical problems and develop effective, sustainable solutions.

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and execute multiple projects and operational tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to communicate technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to create accurate technical documentation and maintain operational standards.

  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively across teams.

  • Strong customer service orientation and commitment to operational excellence.


Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office and data center/server room environment, with occasional travel to our client's facilities.

  • May require lifting and moving computer equipment, servers, and related hardware consistent with safety guidelines.

  • May require evening, weekend, and after-hours work for maintenance windows, outages, upgrades, or emergency response.

  • Participation in on-call rotation may be required.
